Sarah appeared on TV many times in her career, she had the reoccurring role of Emily on Spencer for Hire. In 1991, she landed the role of young Jackie Kennedy in the TV movie a woman named Jackie that was based on the best selling book. In 1992, she landed a role in the soap opera called Swan’s Crossing. The soap did not last very long but at the end of it’s run Sarah auditioned for the role of Kendall Hart, daughter of Susan Lucci’s character Erica Kane on the ABC soap opera, All My Children.

Sarah was eighteen when she won a Daytime Emmy Award for her role. She won in the category of Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series. Later that year, Sarah left All My Children, rumor had it that she and costar Susan Lucci were not getting along in the set. After leaving All My Children she won a costarring role in the hit movie, I know What You Did Last Summer. That movie costarred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Philippe and her future husband Freddie Prinze Jr.

After filming for the movie ended Sarah was set to be the lead role in the TV show Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, made from the movie of the same name. That series was named one of the best shows on TV, however the Emmy Awards did not recognize her as a great actress, she was better than most on TV at that time.
